Many members of the family possess heirlooms linked to past generations of Sturges. Regardless of the branch of the family, it is not surprising that a good number of these relate to Joseph Sturge (1793 - 1856,) possibly the most famous of our line. Amongst the letters, books and other memorabilia, is the print reproduced here. Joseph Sturge This picture is dedicated to the Most Noble Marquis of Sligo a tribute of respect for the [missing] Drawn on Stone by H Millichamp From a Picture in the possession of W Boultbee Esq M N Hannart, Lith Printers, 64 Charlotte St. Rathbone Pl.
The owner of the portrait has almost certainly been identified as William Boultbee of Birmingham, a fellow radical who supported many of the same causes as Joseph; (further information about W. Boultbee can be found at www.boultbee.freeserve.co.uk/bfh/x.htm.) We would be pleased to hear from anyone who knows the whereabouts of that original picture or any family member who also has a copy of this print, possibly with complete text. Neither the National Portrait Gallery nor the British Museum appear to have copies. The dedication refers to the second Marquis of Sligo, a Governor of Jamaica who, like Joseph, had "Sligoville," a free village, named after him. (See "A Visit to Sturge Town" on this website.)
